The University Department of English, VBU, is an iconic presence. It has a well earned reputation for its progressive and innovative outlook towards teaching and research in the fields of language and literature studies in English. It commenced as a postgraduate centre of Ranchi University at the century old St Columbas College, Hazaribag, in 1983, with Prof S N Sinha as the first Head of Department. It had a unique ambience, ensconced in the COHSSIP room in the Victorian architecture of the old block of the college, producing a stream of talented students through its portals year after year. At the helm was also Prof M L Das, who later joined as the first Pro Vice Chancellor of VinobaBhave University, officiating as its Vice Chancellor as well for a brief period. Prof S P Misra and Prof R N Jha were on the faculty team. When VinobaBhave University came into existence in 1992, the premises were shifted to the building of the Government Teachers Training College near Hazaribag Lake where all departments ran in some three odd rooms.
The Department was relocated in the Vigyan Bhawan of the present Sindoor campus in 2001, on the top floor of the edifice that resembles coincidentally the initial Elizabethan public theatre, The Swan. Since then it has been a bit itinerant like most other departments of the young university that is blooming architecturally in phases. It moved to the MBA building and then to the present station at Rabindranath Tagore Bhawan, on the first floor, the classrooms overlooking the Vinodini Tarwey enclosure and park and the goldmohur trees flanking the south boulevard of the university on the north and the unpopulated maidan nestling between the girls hostel and the imposing engineering college workshop on the east. The Department, during these years, has been led by several academicians like Dr B P Misra, Prof Yamuna Prasad and Dr (Mrs) Mani Sinha. Dr (Mrs) KakoliJoardar and Dr. Rajesh Kumar. It is at present moving fast to achieve its goals under the dynamic headship of Dr. Rizwan Ahmad. The department has learned and experienced faculty members.
A unique feature of the Department is its spirit to lead through examples personal and academic. It is a repository of constructive ideas and actions, providing valuable inputs to the overall growth of the university.
Geography is a field of Social science dedicated to the study of the lands, the features, the inhabitants, and the phenomena of Earth. Geography as a discipline can be split broadly into two main subsidiary fields: human geography and physical geography. The former largely focuses on the built environment and how humans create, view, manage, and influence space. The latter examines the natural environment, and how organisms, climate, soil, water, and landforms produce and interact.
Geology is an earth science comprising the study of solid Earth,
the rocks of which it is composed, and the processes by which
they change. Geology can also refer generally to the study of the
solid features of any celestial body (such as the geology of the
Moon or Mars).
Geology gives insight into the history of
the Earth by providing the primary evidence for plate tectonics,
the evolutionary history of life, and past climates. Geology is
important for mineral and hydrocarbon exploration and
exploitation, evaluating water resources, understanding of
natural hazards, the remediation of environmental problems, and
for providing insights into past climate change. Geology also
plays a role in geotechnical engineering and is a major academic
discipline.
The University Department of History was established in 1973 as P.G. Centre and Department of History of Ranchi University at Hazaribag, It assumed Independent status as P.G. Department of History, VinobaBhave University of Hazaribag in 1992. This is the largest department of VinobaBhave University and as such it enjoys the privilege of being the oldest Department of the University along with the P.G. Department of Economics. From 1973 till the completion of the building for social science of V.B.U. it functioned and managed its classes in St. Columbas College, Hazaribag and other make shift venues as determined by the University. Presently the department is situated in the ground floor of RabindraNath Tagore Bhawan (Arts Block) sprawling through its left flank. In this socio-economically backward region of North Chhotanagpur, it caters to the common man's aspiration for higher studies. The department with largest numerical strength of the students speaks a lot about the popularity of the subject and accessibility of the students to qualitative higher education through this department. This is not a coincidence that the History Department of V.B.U has produced maximum number of doctorates in comparison to any other department. The maximum no. of registered Ph.D. Research Scholars is testimony to this fact of vibrant research activities. U.G.C sponsored National Seminar on 1857 Movement in Jharkhand and International Seminar on Religion, Ethnicity and Resistance are only few examples of the dynamism and lively existence of the Department. The teaching quality is ensured by a strong and dedicated team of Departments Faculty members, Retired Guest Teachers, Inspired Scholarships and substantial number of Fellowship for SCs/STs scholars supported by the Department.

It is the study of topics such as quantity (numbers), structure, space, and change. There is a range of views among mathematicians and philosophers as to the exact scope and definition of mathematics.
Mathematics is used throughout the world as an essential tool in many fields, including natural science, engineering, medicine, finance and the social sciences. Applied mathematics, the branch of mathematics concerned with application of mathematical knowledge to other fields, inspires and makes use of new mathematical discoveries, which has led to the development of entirely new mathematical disciplines, such as statistics and game theory. Mathematicians also engage in pure mathematics or mathematics for its own sake, without having any application in mind.

Philosophy is the study of the general and fundamental nature of reality, existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind and language. Philosophy has been divided into many sub-fields. It has been divided chronologically (e.g., ancient and modern); by topic (the major topics being epistemology, logic, metaphysics, ethics, and aesthetics); and by style (e.g., analytic philosophy). As a method, philosophy is often distinguished from other ways of addressing such problems by its questioning, critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on rational argument. In casual speech, the term can refer to any of the most basic beliefs, concepts, and attitudes of an individual or group.
Physics is one of the oldest academic disciplines, perhaps the oldest through its inclusion of astronomy. Over the last two millennia, physics was a part of natural philosophy along with chemistry, certain branches of mathematics, and biology, but during the scientific revolution in the 17th century, the natural sciences emerged as unique research programs in their own right.
Physics also makes significant contributions through advances in new technologies that arise from theoretical breakthroughs. For example, advances in the understanding of electromagnetism or nuclear physics led directly to the development of new products that have dramatically transformed modern-day society, such as television, computers, domestic appliances, and nuclear weapons advances in thermodynamics led to the development of industrialization, and advances in mechanics inspired the development of calculus.
Physical therapy or physiotherapy (often abbreviated to PT) is a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialty that remediates impairments and promotes mobility, function, and quality of life through examination, diagnosis, prognosis, and physical intervention (therapy using mechanical force and movements).
Political science is a social science discipline that deals with systems of government and the analysis of political activity and political behavior. It deals extensively with the theory and practice of politics which is commonly thought of as the determining of the distribution of power and resources. Political scientists see themselves engaged in revealing the relationships underlying political events and conditions, and from these revelations they attempt to construct general principles about the way the world of politics works.
Psychology is the study of mind and behavior. It is an academic discipline and an applied science which seeks to understand individuals and groups by establishing general principles and researching specific cases.
Sanskrit is the primary liturgical language of Hinduism, a philosophical language in Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism, and a literary language that was in use as a lingua franca in the Indian cultural zone. It is a standardized dialect of the Old Indo-Aryan language, originating as Vedic Sanskrit and tracing its linguistic ancestry back to Proto-Indo-Iranian and Proto-Indo-European. Today it is listed as one of the 22 scheduled languages of India and is an official language of the state of Uttarakhand. Sanskrit holds a prominent position in Indo-European studies.
The corpus of Sanskrit literature encompasses a rich tradition of poetry and drama as well as scientific, technical, philosophical and religious texts. Sanskrit continues to be widely used as a ceremonial language in Hindu religious rituals and Buddhist practice in the form of hymns and chants.
The Department of Sanskrit at VBU was founded in 1994, two years after the university was established in 1992, under the headship of Late Prof. (Dr.) Hrishikesh Ojha. Sanskrit as a language is believed to be the most ancient language and has blanketed huge reservoir of invaluable knowledge under it. Sanskrit has been catering to the requirements of other subjects too including Mathematics, Philosophy, Science etc. National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) is a firm believer that the 7th generation computers will be best suitable table-bordered table-striped with Sanskrit as the Operating Language. Considering these the importance of Sanskrit in the contemporary scientific world becomes indispensible.
Modern Standard Urdu is a standardized register of the Hindustani language. It is an official language of six states of India. It is also one of the 22 official languages recognized in the Constitution of India.
