About the Department
University Department of Botany has been imparting quality education in Plant Science since its inception in the year 1992. The Department presently is in Sir JC Bose building.
The Department offers Post Graduate programme leading to the degree of M.Sc. and Ph.D. M. Phil course is to start shortly. The Choice Based Credit System, popularly known as CBCS has been implemented from 2015-16 session. The curricula are an ideal blend of classical Botany and modern topics adhering to the guide lines of UGC. The students are continuously encouraged to augment their personality, undertake field study and acquire firsthand knowledge of plants. Modern tools for teaching are used and seminars, symposia, and workshops are organised regularly. Special lectures by eminent persons are salient features of our Department.

- Cytogenetics and Cop Improvement
- Plant Biotechnology
Research
The department is actively engaged in research in the following thrust areas
- Allelopathy
- Cytogenetics and Crop Improvement
- Plant Tissue culture and Micropropagation.
- Biodiversity
- Environmental Impact Assessment
- Medicinal Plants
The Department has a library facility of about 2000 books and several research journals (both online as well as offline) are to its credit. The Department has produced about 54 Ph.D scholars till 2015. The faculty members have also published several research papers in National and International journals with good citation index and impact factor. The Department also maintains a Botanical Garden having many rare and endangered species and a museum which has about 135 landraces of rice varieties of Jharkhand and adjoining states.
Faculty and supporting staff
The Department has presently 05 faculty members out of which 02 are Professors, 01 Associate Professor, and 02 Assistant Professors. There are 06 supporting staff – 02 Office Assistants, 02 Peons 01 sweeper and 01 Gardener.
Extra-Curricular Activities.
Apart from regular class room teaching and research work, the students and faculty members of the Department also participates in social activities like Swachhata Abhiyan, plantation drive, green audit etc. The Department also observes various days of National and International importance, undertakes various types of environment related studies. The students also take active part in sports and cultural programmes.
